The instant messaging tools continue to spread in business, and today we see three main trends:

Gartner a constaté que 62 % des entreprises consultées n'offrent aucune solution de MI officielle. Mais cela varie fortement en fonction de la taille des entreprises, les grandes entreprises étant moins nombreuses à ignorer le sujet (44,6 % contre 84 % dans les petites organisations).
La même enquête montre que 57 % des personnes interrogées utilisent les outils de MI sur le lieu de travail, pour des usages personnels, ce qui représente une utilisation non régulée public networks. But a similar proportion said they used IM at home for business purposes.
In terms of value perceived by users, the MI produce three main types of response:
